Springboks Training

We went to Owen Delaney Park to see
the South African Rugby Team, the Springboks training.
Brendan Weatherley from Classic Hits radio was there, he gave us posters and threw balls and drink bottles into the crowd.
We all made small South African flags to wave and we took along our rugby balls in the hope of getting autographs.
Mrs Allen had bought a large South African flag for our class, we waved that too.
We even made a 'Broadlands School' banner to help us get noticed.

We saw lots of the team members up close and got heaps of photos and some autographs too.
It was a great outing.
We hope you enjoy watching our photostories.

A visit from two 'Baby Blacks'.

On Friday Sam Cane and Carl Axtens came to visit us.
They both played for the New Zealand Under 20 rugby team (the Baby Blacks) that won
the Junior World Championships in Italy earlier this year.
They also happen to be ex-pupils of Broadlands School and cousins of Robbie, Joshua and Charlotte.

We had time out on the field together playing rugby and then they came into class to talk to us.
They showed us their team tops and their medals.
They answered our questions and then signed autographs for us.
It was a fantastic visit!!

THANK YOU SAM AND CARL!

The Button Box

This term we are working on a whole school
 production of 'The Button Box'.
We have been very busy rehearsing our songs.
This is one of our favourites.

Reporoa Cluster Schools' Cultural Festival

Today we performed our Kapa Haka items at
the Reporoa Cluster Schools' Cultural Festival.
It was our very first time performing in front of an audience and also
the very first time we had been onto the stage at the College.
We were all very nervous beforehand but once we were on the stage we
forgot about the audience and did our very best.
We all had a great time.
Thank you Whaea Donna for teaching us!!

3-D SHAPES

To complete our unit on '3-D shapes' we have been constructing 3-D shapes out of spaghetti and marshmallows.

The marshmallows are the vertices (corners).
The spaghetti makes the edges (sides).

Before we were able to make a shape we had to say it's name
and how many marshmallows and pieces of spaghetti we needed to make it.
It was fiddly but fun to do.
Watch our photostory.

Pass It

Term 3 has started with another Bay of Plenty sports activity.
We are now doing 'Pass it', which has a netball focus.
Our first teacher was Anna, she taught us how to do chest passes.

Then we had Julianna Naoupu, she has just been named as a Silver Fern!!!
Lots of us took the opportunity to get her autograph or a photo.
We are so lucky to be able to work with one of the country's best players.
Julianna with Room 1.

We also had Lucy coach us, she helped us to improve our bounce passes.

Cooperative learning about hangi.

We have worked cooperatively with Room 2 to find out about different types of hangi.
We worked in pairs, Tuakana and Teina together to support each other.
We used the notebooks to access an interactive learning game.
If you would like to try it yourself click on the link below.

Matariki Day

On Friday Broadlands School held our second annual 'Matariki Day'.
We began the day with our usual Friday morning start of LEP, Learners Enrichment Programme, activites.
Then after morning tea we split up into our house groups and spent the next session working with our house leaders doing some creative Matariki activities.
For lunch we had a Hangi, that was fantastic, some of us had never experienced a hangi before.
In the afternoon we had planned to have inter-house sports but because of the poor weather we changed our plans and had a session with Matua Grant.
We loved that, as you can see in our photostory, thanks Matua.
We sang all our favourite Waiata and action songs.
It was a great way to end Maori Language Week!!

Kick It 2

We have enjoyed our Kick it sessions this week.
Our favourite games are 'Trucks and Trailers' and 'Ghostbusters'.
In 'Trucks and Trailers' we have a partner, sometimes we have to stay close together (like a truck and its trailer), sometimes we have to try to escape from our 'trailer' and create a big gap between us.
It is great fun and helps us to practice our football skills.

Cooperative Learning

For our Inquiry Rooms 1 and 2 often work together in Cooperative Learning groups.
Each group member has a special role to play: Recorder; Time-keeper; Materials Manager; Participation Officer; Noise Controller etc.
The whole group needs to work together to complete the task on time!

On Friday we were entertained by the fantastic Kahurangi Cultural Group.

Kayden's Helmet

It has been ages since we learned that Kayden had won the competition
to have his helmet design made into a real bike helmet that he can wear.
At last, in assembly this week, came the moment that we had all been waiting for...
Kayden's helmet has arrived and Mr Taylor presented it to him!!

Cool helmet, Buddy!!

Our Learning Centre

At our school we have a wonderful Learning Centre  which contains
our school library, a two-touch smart board and several computers.
Once a week we are able to go and work in there with Tracey,  our librarian.
We do special activities  to help us learn about different books, authors and the organisation of a library.
We are also allowed to issue books that we can take home to read.
We LOVE going to the Learning Centre every week.

Tagan brought an enormous carrot to school today for her news.

We were all amazed at the size of it.
When we took a photo we put a ruler on the floor next to it. It is almost as long as the ruler!!

Tagan answered the children's questions about it.

A Special Surprise.

On Friday Tracey came to our class with a surprise parcel!
It was addresssed to Jemma and Room 1 at Broadlands School.
We filmed Jemma opening it.
It was from Harold the Giraffe at the Life Education Trust.
Jemma and Maggie had written him a letter saying how much we enjoyed his visit to our school.

Inside there was a letter to us all, a special Harold toy and some stickers for Jemma
and 2 boxes of Harold plasters and 2 sheets of stickers for the class.
We all felt very special.

They showed great  Creativity!
They called it "ZuZuLand".

Christchurch Earthquake Fundraiser

Renee and Abi, two of our year 6 pupils wanted to raise money to support the people of Christchurch.
They came up with the idea of a wacky hair day/ mufti day.
Today, one week after the earthquake, we held our fundraiser.
Enjoy our photostory.

At 12:51 we had 2 minutes silence along with the rest of the country.

In singing we sang our favourite 'Bad Hair Day' song.

At the end of the day Renee and Abi held an assembly where they gave out certificates and prizes for the best hair or costume.
We had a really good day and raised over $300.
Well done Broadlands School.

The whole school went into the Learning Centre together to practice.

Matua Grant told us how to pronounce our Maori sounds correctly.
It is important for us to try to pronounce words properly.
He asked us to make faces while we said the sounds!
Mita o te reo.

We learned the Maori names for parts of the body
and sang a song to practice them.
It was such great fun!

Then we tried going even faster.
Watch Room 4, the New Entrants have a go.
